The speakers will still work if you can afford or have invested in a streaming service. I cannot over state my disappointment in in learning they are taking away, in my opinion, a fundamental function from the system. I was so excited to find out they are developing garden speakers and been watching eagerly for their launch. And, up until now, you can control them from your hand held device and stream music. The fact you didn’t have to get a wired system, it made it easy to add too and group speakers, the sound quality is REALLY good and the supporting software made it all so easy to control. We loved the sense of innovation that Sonos bought. We fell in love with Sonos and have invested heavily in the system.
